Beauceron:

Beauceron is a herding dog bred in France. It has many nicknames but most common of them are probably French Shorthaired Shepherd and Berger de Beauce, Bas Rouge. This powerfully built and muscular type of breed is portrayed as intelligent, protective, affable, very composed and caring of children. They are just the thing for both indoors and outside the house and capable of being trained for several activities. This breed stands up to sixty one to seventy cm in tallness and weighs about thirty to forty kilos. Its usual coat color is black and tan, black or harlequin. Further colors, such as the formerly prevailing yellowish-brown, grey or grey/black, are currently disqualified. A very adaptable breed, it was on one occasion used to herd sheep in addition to guard them from wolves. The breed assisted in both World Wars like a messenger dog, supply transportation dog, uncovering of land mines and rescue of the injured. Not only that, the Beauceron has tough herding qualities and potential. The local names are rather ambiguous and misleading. The breed in fact does not originate from Beauce but Brie; on the other hand, a special breed (the Briard) had that local name first. Even though quite different in look and form, both breeds originate from identical ancestral stock.
